Trend report: my AW19 wish list

While the fashion industry is becoming less seasonal by the day, instead opting for more frequent ‘drops’, in my mind, September is still officially New Season month. I still look forward to the September issue of Vogue (yes, I’m the one keeping print afloat) (Just – R.I.P Marie Claire) and I’m relieved to see proper clothes in the shops instead of endless tees and shorts. One of my SS20 menswear highlights (again) was Dior, whose creative director, Kim Jones continues to play with ‘feminine’ tropes like organza and embroidery in its menswear shows. My favourite: this embroidered organza bomber covered in painstakingly hand-pleated swirls – immaculately replicated in the hair. (more…)

Wales Bonner SS19 by Harley Weir

It’s been a big old week for Grace Wales Bonner. On Wednesday she was named as the winner of the BFC/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund £200k prize, while also collaborating with Dior on its 2020 Resort collection and hosting a ‘devotional meditative sound experience’ in New York with Solange Knowles, as part of Frieze. The prize win is a pretty good accolade, not that it’s the magic bullet people assume it is. Thomas Tait, who won the LVMH Prize in 2014, opened up recently about the reality behind the facade of young designer ‘success’. It’s still tough out there… (more…)

Up close: Dior menswear AW19

Dior menswear aw19 Raymond Pettibon tabard

What a treat to get a close up look at the Raymond Pettibon pieces at the Dior menswear AW19 press day.

Kim Jones excelled himself with couture quality pieces adorned with Pettibon’s artwork including the spectacular embroidered tabard that wowed everyone at the show. You can see a close up below; the phrase, “with their own light and lash I have drawn them” is from an old Pettibon artwork. (more…)
