Superfine Tailoring Black Style by Tyler Mitchell

The joy in these photos, taken by Tyler Mitchell for the MET’s ‘Superfine: Tailoring Black Style’ exhibition catalogue, is palpable. Fabulous finery, impeccable styling, chic shoes (opera pumps!), gentle gestures, it’s all there. Mitchell said he pulled inspo from “Harlem, Atlanta, Lagos, London, and beyond.” The show, a “cultural and historical examination of Black style over three hundred years through the concept of dandyism”, opens on 10th May (preceded by the MET Gala of course) and looks like one of the strongest MET Costume Institute shows in recent years. We’ve also got the big Phoebe Philo reveal to come, as well as a focus on revivalist classic fashion (aka gentlewoman style). For this you can easily shop your closet, or consider buying pre-loved – the quality may be better and so may the price. “The connection between instability in the economy and consumers’ desire for classic, quality pieces that retain value is certainly at play, as is the cultural zeitgeist,” Kelly McSweeney, senior merchandising manager at The RealReal, told WWD. Mid fashion week I swished over to BAFTA to the UK premiere of The First Monday In May, the documentary about the making of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s 2015 fashion exhibition and the accompanying Costume Institute Met Gala. Diane Arbus: In The Beginning

New York really is calling my name at the moment. I’ve not been for aeons but I’m definitely feeling signs that I need to be there. For example, this exhibition, that The Met Breuer is hosting from July 12th. Diane Arbus: In The Beginning looks at seven important early years of the influential photographer, from when she took her first proper roll of 35mm film and presciently numbered it, #no 1.

There will be over 100 photographs on display, of which more than two-thirds have never been seen before. (more…)
