A brief work trip to Paris a couple of weeks ago allowed me to experience the Musée Yves Saint Laurent in Avenue Marceau, the former premises of YSL couture. Part of the 60th anniversary celebrations of Yves Saint Laurent, the latest exhibition, ‘Yves Saint Laurent au 5, avenue Marceau’ focuses on the archives and know-how of the designer and his coterie of technical specialists and as such is just a joy for process nerds. While the business of luxury has flung open its damask curtains in recent years, there’s one area that remains a relatively closed affair; the inner workings of the factory.
Factory, atelier, workshop, call it what you will, luxury brands like to reveal a limited, curated view (as witnessed by the craftsmanship porn videos flooding their social media feeds). Mid fashion week I swished over to BAFTA to the UK premiere of The First Monday In May, the documentary about the making of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s 2015 fashion exhibition and the accompanying Costume Institute Met Gala.
