Raf Simons is quitting his label

Raf Simons

Oof, I wasn’t expecting that. With a lone post on his IG, Raf Simons announced that after 27 years, he’s quitting his own label.

Say it ain’t so!

No concrete explanation has been given and responses have been varied, from “finally – because no one was buying it” to an outpouring of crying emojis (mine).

Of course, he’s continuing as co-creative director of Prada, which has led to some speculation that Raf is being groomed as Miuccia’s successor should she decide to retire. Others suggested maybe there’s a ‘second act’ to come. After all, his note ends on, “Forward always”. (more…)

Perfect pairing: socks and loafers

Morjas x Casatlantic loafers

One of the major trends of the year is undoubtedly the deconstructed prep of Miu Miu SS22 – think pleated skirts, loafers and school uniform socks.

While I haven’t succumbed to the pleated skirt* (yet), I’ve enjoyed all the sightings and varied configurations of pleated midi skirt, relaxed-fit trench, loafers and socks. My current trench of choice is this Mackintosh Maili*, a lighter weight than usual, with side splits and no epaulettes to get tangled up in your Hermes Constance New Yorker tote bag. This nutty brown one by & Other Stories* is also lovely (and a good price at £165), or for better size availability, the trad beige version is here*. (more…)

My go-to for warm knitwear is Shetland and mohair. Thanks to Michael Williams (of A Continuous Lean fame), I’ve just learnt about ‘Shaggy Dog’ sweaters. These fuzzy Shetland wool sweaters seem to be everywhere on the menswear circuit; Mr DRG likes the Drake’s version (below), while Williams recommends the endless colourways from J Press (below). Trend report: what to wear for AW22

Craig McDean British Vogue Aug 2022

As you know by now, my trend reports are utterly self-indulgent and reflect what’s ‘new’ through my own personal ‘gentlewoman style’ lens. So I’m glad to say that fifty shades of cappuccino, a Ralph Lauren revival, chunky gold chains and classic bags (with a twist) are all trending for AW22. Of course, the 90s is a major influence on fashion and culture. (more…)
