Is it me or are there very few cool images of great grey haircuts out there?
The diversity conversation is great n all but one area where diversity is still lacking fashion-and-beauty wise is in the sphere of ‘older’ women who look their age.
What do I mean by ‘older women’? In this case, let’s say 50+. This is the age of the supermodel generation, and I just noticed a Prada ad in British Vogue featuring 90s model Rachel Williams. (Vogue coincidentally, should be applauded for its “Reframing Fashion” May cover featuring Aaron Rose Phillip in a very visible wheelchair.) In this photo above, Williams has unretouched, visibly 50-year-old-skin (lip lines! Forehead lines!) and blonde waves with a broad streak of grey and ‘still’ looks striking and glamorous. Well done, Prada.
But where are the cool cuts for mature grey hair on Instagram, Pinterest, hair care campaigns, beauty editorials etc to amplify the pro-ageing message? After all, ageing is the one form of discrimination we’ll all get to experience – if we’re lucky to live that long.
On my (rather sparse) grey hair Pinterest mood board are Alyson Walsh, Linda V Wright (giving modern-day C.Z Guest vibes with her flip bob), Ana Gimeno Brugada and Michiko Kitamura. Where the rest of my grey hair style icons at?
