When Louis Vuitton launched its very ‘feminine’ floral and oriental Les Parfums line in 2016, it swerved the trend of the moment by marketing it strictly to women and not as gender-neutral.

As I expected, it has now brought out a men’s collection.

Gender-neutral fragrances are great (I prefer them as they usually feature either clean, green and citrusy notes, or smoky woods and leathers), but for a brand they have fewer marketing opportunities. (more…)

Rest in peace handbag legend Judith Leiber, who died within hours of her husband last weekend at the age of 97. Her story was fascinating. An émigré from Budapest, she set up her own company in New York after learning her trade at Hungarian handbag-makers, Pessl. Her bags were a favourite of First Ladies – notably Nancy Reagan – but it was when she evolved from leather and satin to her surrealist crystal designs (in the shape of fruits, flowers and even Humpty Dumpty), that she found a cult following in showbiz A-listers and serious collectors. Last week, I went to a Fash & Mash Pioneers talk with Dan Widmaier, CEO and co-founder of Bolt Threads, the textile start-up that’s been working with Stella McCartney to create sustainable high-performance fabrics, such as lab-grown ‘spider silk’. It was well timed to add to the conversation around Earth Day and this week’s Fashion Revolution Week, in which we take a good look at our consumption habits and how they affect the world around us. The main takeaway from Widmaier’s talk was the realisation that our current consumption levels are truly out of control. So this year’s Fashion Revolution Week seems to be more important than ever.
