1. MARGARET HOWELL PAYS TRIBUTE TO BARBARA HEPWORTH
Every year Mr DRG and I talk about going to St Ives and I’ve still never been. Oh well, this summer St Ives (kind of) comes to us with Tate Britain’s new exhibition, Barbara Hepworth: Sculpture for a Modern World. Big news for photography buffs and collectors; Somerset House is hosting London’s first international photography fair, Photo London. It’s like Frieze for photography, or so I’m reliably informed, and will include up to 70 of the world’s biggest photography galleries, as well as exhibitions and an impressive programme of talks (speakers confirmed include Steve McCurry, Stephen Shore and Mitch Epstein). As a rule, I don’t do ‘press release’ blogging (aka cut-n-paste blogging) but there’s simply too much info here to do otherwise! So if you haven’t seen Matisse Cut-Outs at Tate Modern yet, why not do it this weekend in the best possible way? Have you booked your ticket for Henri Matisse: The Cut-Outs yet? Do go, I grumbled a bit about the £18 ticket price but someone pointed out to me that the rest of the museum is free, which I guess is a very good point.
Anyway I couldn’t not share this gem from the Tate, who rocked up at Iris Apfel’s house to film her Matisse-inspired wardrobe. As she says, anyone who works with colour has to have been inspired by Matisse – how could they not?
