Trend report: What to wear for AW21

Gabriela Hearst AW21

New season, new trends! I don’t subscribe to big changes so I tend to look for second-time-around trends that suit my personal taste. (Much more manageable that way.) We’re all a bit more conscious about how we shop now so here’s a gentle reminder that you can probably just shop your existing closet for some of these. While there’s definitely a sense of ‘going out out‘ energy in the air, I’m more focused on the everyday wardrobe. So new denim silhouettes, elevated knits, hands-free bags and the perfect boots it is – with a little wellness and beauty newness included!

1/ WATCH BAES? IT’S TIME.
It’s taken a while, but classic women’s watches are having a moment. Recognised as timeless accessories rather than simply timekeepers, their popularity is being celebrated by watchfluencer platforms such as Hodinkee and Brynn Wallner’s Dimepiece. The secondary watch market is booming too, with The RealReal reporting high resale value for Cartier (below) and Patek Philippe. (more…)

Bringing back the blazer and jeans

The accessory of 2020 may have been the Covid mask, but a close second was the mini hands-free bag. I was very lucky to receive a Porter Yoshida & Co Force bag* (below) for Christmas; a compact crossbody bag with adjustable strap that can be worn inside or outside your jacket.

It’s what I currently use for my walks or coffee runs as it fits my mask (in a clear Ziploc), phone, earphones, keys and cash without bulking out. If I wanted to, I could fit in a mini umbrella as well. (more…)

Palate cleanser: part two

Joseph Tape New Cady trousers

Continuing my palate cleanse, I spotted these New Cady Tape trousers* (above) on the Joseph* website and remembered how obsessed I was with their Queen jeans a few year ago. Being 5’2″, I prefer my tailored trousers a bit cropped. I’m guessing these would need altering if they look like this on a tall model, but overall they’re a super useful shape. Annoying not to be able to try them on IRL though.

Joseph’s website is full of restful winter neutrals. These creamy colours may seem completely impractical, but I quite fancy myself as a modern day Slim Aarons heroine slurping après ski hot chocolate on imaginary winter slopes. (more…)
