Gentlewoman style: Sofia Coppola living the Uniqlo life

I hate to say it, but Uniqlo really is the new Gap. (Yeah, I’m a tad late on this; I guess I’ve been in denial.) Its latest LifeWear magazine absolutely nails the Ametora* sweet spot between American Ivy dressing and Japanese gentlewoman style.

This issue features New Yorkers expressing the ‘joys of clothing’, including the likes of art dealer Jeffrey Deitch, Balcony magazine founders Vicente Muñoz and Audrey Rose Smith, musician Sophia Pastorius-Young and Sofia Coppola living their best lives in Uniqlo chinos, rain macs, high waist jeans and stripy pyjamas. It’s the season for… half-sleeve sweaters!

I call this in-between season ‘springshine’ – you get a bit of sunshine but there’s still a crisp ‘freshness’ in the air. So while I’m tempted to pull out my short-sleeve knits, I inevitably end up layering a cardigan on top. (Or at least over the shoulders Hooray-style.)

Sara Lanzi’s SS22 collection includes this striped taffeta drop-waist dress which lends itself very nicely to the trend for hard-meets-soft styling. Trend Report: what to wear for SS22

What’s new in fashion? Nothing much! What’s being reprised, updated, revamped, remixed? Loads. This spring it’s mostly about rehashing the 90s and 00s and what’s kind of scary is that ‘the 90s’ is now officially retro in the way the 50s was for me.
