Gentlewoman style: Sofia Coppola living the Uniqlo life
I hate to say it, but Uniqlo really is the new Gap. (Yeah, I’m a tad late on this; I guess I’ve been in denial.) Its latest LifeWear magazine absolutely nails the Ametora* sweet spot between American Ivy dressing and Japanese gentlewoman style.
This issue features New Yorkers expressing the ‘joys of clothing’, including the likes of art dealer Jeffrey Deitch, Balcony magazine founders Vicente Muñoz and Audrey Rose Smith, musician Sophia Pastorius-Young and Sofia Coppola living their best lives in Uniqlo chinos, rain macs, high waist jeans and stripy pyjamas.
Design-wise I can’t fault the collections. Quality-wise, things could be slightly improved (I think people would pay the extra £5-£10). Ditton on proportions – plus, they need to make more of their styles unisex. There are some excellent men’s shorts, chinos and ecru jeans that stop at a size S. You’re Japanese ffs, you can afford to run to at least an XS, trust me on this guys!
On my radar right now: the Linen Blend Bermuda Shorts*, the Peg Top High-Rise Jeans*, Sofia Coppola’s Jersey Short Jacket* and the Canvas Tote Bag*.
