The DRG Style Index: Goop, Lacoste, Estee Lauder, Fred Perry X Le Kilt and more…

Here’s the latest weekly DRG STYLE INDEX ranking, a round-up of the brands and industry stories currently buzzing on my radar…

I WENT TO THE GOOP STORE AND I LIKED IT
Goop Westbourne Grove London store
I finally ventured into the Goop London pop-up store on Westbourne Grove to see what the fuss was about. I didn’t feel bombarded; I did see lots of stuff I wanted to buy. A set of amethyst-coloured tumblers, French Girl eye oil, lots of ecru-coloured cazhmere. Nothing ground-breaking, just comforting lifestyle porn at its best. Apparently it’s now a permanent fixture. Kilian does make-up – Le Rouge Parfum

Kilian lipstick Le Rouge Parfum

It’s been three years since Estee Lauder acquired Kilian, the fragrance brand by Kilian Hennessy. I’ve always liked the fragrances and Kilian’s approach to packaging design. His perfumes come in decorative minaudieres that double as a night time clutch, inspired by his grandmother’s Van Cleef & Arpels cigarette cases. And he has also created some great wearable fragrances in the guise of jewellery that conceals a scented ceramic blotter.

So this new addition to the brand shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise – Kilian has released colour. An initial selection of twelve Kilian lipsticks in the most fabulous engraved lacquer cases. (more…)

Gentlewoman Style: New Celine AW19

Celine AW19

Funny isn’t it, how quickly one adapts. In one season the media and public have flipped from hating Hedi’s take on Celine to kind of loving it.

When Hedi Slimane showed his first vision of new Celine, Phoebe Philo’s fan club were bereft. They swarmed to Vestiaire Collective to buy up whatever Phoebe-era #oldceline bags and shoes they could get their hands on, freaking out that her conceptual-lite aesthetic had been obliterated by evil Hedi in place of – the horror! – generic luxury tropes of the sort he’d previously produced at Saint Laurent.

Six months later though, they’ve calmed down and come round. (more…)

Perfect pairing: matte meets shine at Chanel beauty SS19

Chanel beauty SS19 Baume Essentiel Multi-Use Glow Stick

What do we think is going to be the overriding beauty aesthetic when we look back over the 2010s? Will it be the contoured-to-the-hilt perfection of the Huda Beauty woman, or the ‘natural’ no make-up vibe of Glossier? They’ve risen in parallel but I feel the hyper-filtered, beauty shtick has reached its nadir making it the decade-defining look that we’ll remember. Which leaves the more sympathetic ‘real skin’ aesthetic to continue into the 2020s.

Certainly it’s nice to see the beauty look from Chanel SS19 putting some emphasis on shine and luminosity than the unforgiving uber-mattes that were everywhere last year. In particular, Chanel is pushing its Baume Essentiel Multi-Use Glow Stick (£33), an all purpose ‘wet glow’ solid balm in a clear (‘Transparent’) or an oyster (‘Sculpting’) shade to dew-ify eyelids, lips, cheekbones and brow bones. I’m definitely up for some ‘wet glow’ lid shine. (more…)
