On Joopiter, style storytelling and investment dressing for the hype set

Hot retail news of the month so far comes from Pharrell Williams’ new online auction platform, Joopiter. “Pioneering a modern collecting economy”, it’s a way to sell off his extensive (11-storage units worth) archive of cultural artefacts, while the site simultaneously serves as an online archive of the archive, complete with content to add cultural clout to the pieces.

The first sale goes live next week (but previews from today here) and will consist of one-off items such as an 18k gold Jacob & Co BlackBerry (est sale price $15k-$25k) and blinged-out Swarovski-ed Stan Smiths (est sale price $2,500-$3,500).

The culture of fashion: Gold by Yves Saint Laurent exhibition

The Yves Saint Laurent Museum in avenue Marceau is fast becoming an essential part of the Paris Fashion Week itinerary. To coincide with this season’s shows, October 10th sees the opening of “Gold by Yves Saint Laurent“, a celebration of the ‘magical’ colour he used from his very first collection in 1962.

Alongside opulent sequin and lamé couture pieces, gilded accessories and objects, will be more than 300 pieces of jewellery designed by Saint Laurent muse and garconne icon, Loulou de la Falaise (above). Other highlights include rare perfume bottles, signature gold buttons (below) and surrealist finger jewellery by Claude Lalanne (below). (more…)

I meant to post this yesterday but I was so exhausted from watching the royal funeral (all that slow marching and heavy lifting!) that I had to leave it another day. Apologies if you’re over all the coverage (entirely understandable) but I couldn’t let it pass without a small mention of this fabulous 1952 portrait of the Queen.

If it looks vaguely familiar, it’s because it’s by the same photographer as the UK stamp portrait session – British photographer Dorothy Wilding. I’m embarrassed to say I’d never heard of her until last week. Wilding was a self-taught portrait photographer with studios in Bond Street and New York and had been the Official Royal Photographer since the 1937 Coronation. (more…)
