10 non-trendy trends to try for 2018

Disneyrollergirl trends to try for 2018 - Prada SS18 by Jason Lloyd-Evans for Wallpaper

There were many major fashion and beauty trends that dominated 2017. Sock trainers, ginormous puffer jackets, ultra matte lips, overpriced merch tees. I didn’t embrace a single one. But I did indulge in a classics revival or two. White denim, the Burberry check and western boots are a few that are still going strong. And Beauty Pie and Glossier were the two beauty bandwagons I couldn’t resist jumping on.

For the coming year, my favourite unofficial visual search engine, Pinterest tells me that cleansing oil saves are up 555%, derma roller saves are up 345% and ‘vitamin C serum’ saves are up 3379%. An olfactory tribute to Colette

Lola James Harper Colette concept store candle and room scent

Colette may be no more, but I like this olfactory tribute to the OG Paris concept store. Fragrance and lifestyle brand, Lola James Harper has reproduced the classic figgy Colette candle, ‘L’Air de Colette‘ in a newly reconfigured candle and room spray (from £35). I remember discovering Lola James Harper’s candles in Colette. (more…)

Chanel numeros rouges limited edition lipsticks
I struggle with festive style. I cannot abide a novelty ‘Christmas jumper’, anything too sequinny makes me think ‘Julien Macdonald for Debenhams’, and sparkly eyeshadow makes my eyelids look like they’re disintegrating.

Instead, I resort to my default option of silk shirt (my black Levi’s one with navy stars is as jazzy as I go) and tailored trousers with a cocktail ring or two and one of my Judith Leiber vintage minaudieres.

Chanel’s Numéros Rouges limited edition Christmas collection is rather jewel-like too, with newly red-encased lipsticks replacing the classic black packaging. (more…)

Can Chanel create a fragrance classic with Gabrielle?

Chanelle Gabrielle

Chanel is really going for it with its new fragrance, Gabrielle. Which is not at all surprising, given it’s its first big fragrance launch in 15 years. Reviews so far have been mixed. Some describe it as smelling like a room diffuser from Next (ouch), while others love its fruity-floral effervescence.

While the ad campaign positions it as bold, groundbreaking and dynamic, it’s really not a power scent. To me it’s more of a pleasing ‘feminine’ floral fragrance that’s uncomplicated and easy to wear. (more…)
