An interesting update in theBarneys bankruptcy story. Online ‘marketplace’ Farfetch is apparently in the frame to buy the store, negotiations which were already taking place before the news was announced of Barneys’ Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing, according to the New York Post.
It’s a sad week for Barneys, which has just filed for bankruptcy. I still remember reading about this mythical store in the early 90s, and then visiting on my first trip to New York. It seemed impossibly chic and glamorous in a 90s minimalist way; I remember buying a Prada tie with my then boyfriend from the downtown NY store and feeling at the centre of the fashion universe! You know a heritage brand is on the up again when fans start to clamour for its vintage numbers. It happened with Gucci, it’s probably happening with Coach and I imagine it will happen with DKNY.
When a classic brand goes through a downturn and then an upswing, it creates a new swell of interest around it. So with Gucci, suddenly all the buzz around Alessandro Michele had people scouring their lofts and closets for long-neglected snaffle loafers and printed scarves. The minimalist menswear accessory brand now has a women’s leather range, currently on sale exclusively at Barneys. “Our female fans have been egging us on to unleash this for a long time.
