Digital LFW was overall a bit of an anti-climax. Unlike many, I don’t ridicule the British Fashion Council for it. I applaud them for trying in #unprecedented times. The main criticisms of the new ‘digital hub’ format were that the content wasn’t exciting enough, there were too few new collections, the panel discussions were too focused on the same topic (Covid) and panellists were ‘the usual suspects’. It’s really quite remarkable that the British Fashion Council and the Council of Fashion Designers of America have joined forces to outline a new future fashion system.
The key is a slower system, that’s fairer for designers (less relentless churn and burnout) and press (fewer fashion weeks to attend), as well as better for the environment (an overall reset on consumerism). The ‘reset’ suggests going back to only two collections a year (more…)

I feel that fashion at the moment is grappling with ephemerality and impermanence and I thought that drawing out the tensions – between change and endurance and transience and permanence and persistence – might be a nice way to create more of a consciousness about fashion going forward.”
The Met Museum’s Costume Institute exhibition, About Time: Fashion and Duration, has been pushed back from Monday 4th May to October 29th in a sad but sensible Coronavirus-impacted move. (more…)
