Got a light?

The Millennial Decorator cigfluencers

News just in: Smoking is – allegedly – cool again. Thanks to Cigfluencers and its ilk on Instagram, we’re being subjected to the great and glam of Hollywood and their smoking habits. From Paul Mescal and Natalie Portman sharing a fag break to Chloe Sevigny in Charli XCX’s ‘360’ video, the vibe is knowingly decadent and deviant. We’re all aware that smoking kills, stains your teeth and gives you foul breath. But those long white sticks drooping from a fingertip are indelibly linked in our brains as the height of old-school sophistication. I mean – Marlene Dietrich!

Onto the merch.

It’s not all about the cigarettes. The accompanying paraphernalia is just as coveted. Can we say vintage Elsa Peretti bean lighter? 1920s Van Cleef cigarette case? Hermès cigarette box? Adding to the appeal is the fact that these products are multi-use. An ashtray* can function as a trinket tray. A cigarette case can be a minaudière. It’s symbolic of more extravagant times, yet your Etsy cigarette box can store vitamins or mints, allowing you to channel your inner old money heiress from the comfort of your zone 3 rental. It’s a vibe and yes, I’m here for it.

Cartier Trinity bracelet by Chitose Abe Sacai

Cartier has been in the news a lot in the last 12 months. Mostly for its watches (this was the latest release and this guy seems to be its most high profile collector), but this month for a new jewellery drop (above).

The Cartier x Chitose Abé (of Sacai fame) collab is perfectly in sync for the two design leaders. The Cartier Trinity ring was initially created in 1924 by Louis Cartier and was a favourite of Jean Cocteau. Its three intertwining bands of yellow gold, rose gold and white gold have been deconstructed by Abé into new distorted shapes in a collection of two rings, a bracelet, a necklace and a hybrid earring-ring. The culture of fashion: A Halstonette’s ephemera for sale

Halston

Halston worked with glamazon models like the late great Naomi Sims (draped in white silk jersey), Marina Schiano, and Elsa Peretti. Elsa came out with her head bowed in a black fedora. Backstage, I congratulated her on her wonderful presence. She shrugged her shoulders and exclaimed in her lyrical voice, “But Nancy, I bowed my head because I was so scared!” It was a time of models with great personalities – these women had unique styles. Elsa had that Warhol style that embraced the unpredictable yet fascinating.”

The above is from an interesting Q&A with Halstonette Nancy North, who is auctioning items including Elsa Peretti jewellery, Halston fashion sketches and candid snaps of Halston and co at Doyle today. My imaginary paddle is poised for the Antonio Lopez illustrations… (more…)

Not your mother’s Tiffany?

Tiffany ad campaign 2021

Love, love, love the clean and classic styling on this Tiffany silver campaign.

The copy is a bit confusing though. It implies classic Tiffany is old fashioned with its “Not your mother’s Tiffany” strapline (which has riled its Instagram followers), yet then suggesting ‘mother knows best’.

Anyway, it’s always interesting to see heritage companies go back to basics; they all seem to do it. It’s a sort of way to reinforce their power, to show new customers their worth (these Elsa Peretti cuffs are iconic after all). (more…)
