Louise Trotter’s New New Bottega hasn’t launched yet, however, we’ve all been swooning over her first campaign*, which went instantly viral last week.

Seeded with a series of close-up hand gestures photographed by Jack Davison, we soon identified the owners of those hands, revealed in videos accompanied by their poetic musings on the power and symbolism of hand work. (more…)

It feels like we’re officially in our ‘small watch era’. After what feels like decades – scratch that, it was decades – of ginormous, chestbeating steel watches, we’re seeing the return of dainty, Deco-era watch cases on chic leather straps.

I’m attributing part of the shift to the affluent, small-wristed Asian customer, and possibly the wave of Chinese celebs being co-opted by luxury brands hoping to entice the next generation of watch enthusiasts. Also to note: the insatiable appetite for vintage watches. (more…)

Cartier Trinity bracelet by Chitose Abe Sacai

Cartier has been in the news a lot in the last 12 months. Mostly for its watches (this was the latest release and this guy seems to be its most high profile collector), but this month for a new jewellery drop (above).

The Cartier x Chitose Abé (of Sacai fame) collab is perfectly in sync for the two design leaders. The Cartier Trinity ring was initially created in 1924 by Louis Cartier and was a favourite of Jean Cocteau. Its three intertwining bands of yellow gold, rose gold and white gold have been deconstructed by Abé into new distorted shapes in a collection of two rings, a bracelet, a necklace and a hybrid earring-ring. Vintage Cartier watches seem to have a magic aura unmatched by other watch brands. Why? Because they push the envelope of outer design and are popular with watch nerds, design nerds and pop culture fiends alike. (Example: Jackie Kennedy’s Cartier Tank was bought by Kim Kardashian in 2017.)

The unique Cartier ‘Cheich’ watch was originally created as a prize for the person who won two consecutive Paris-Dakar races (aka The Dakar Rally, a gruelling bike race through France and into the African desert), in what was known as the Cartier Challenge. (more…)
