Welcome to the latest travel retail column for DRG by Alison Farrington aka The Retail Planner (TRP).

As the first update of the New Year, we kick off with a brief look at the new laws for duty free here in the UK, as well as some positive retail news from China.

1/ SEE EU LATER.
This month, there will undoubtedly be much Brexsplaining going on as travellers come to terms with the cancellation of tax-free shopping refunds for luxury fashion purchases in the UK. As of 1 January, the government has abolished the VAT Refund Scheme for non-EU travellers in the UK, meaning that shoppers from overseas can no longer claim their tax back on luxury purchases when they return home, unless the goods are shipped separately from the traveller (cost prohibitive). Everyday movement

COS Active collection SS21

Don’t panic! This is a ‘new year, new me’-free zone, but I’ve just been served a fresh drop of COS active wear that I thought I’d share. COS positions its COS Active* collection (quite cleverly) as ‘designed for everyday movement’, thus taking it out of pure gym-speak.

Palate cleanser: The Row SS21

The Row SS21

After overindulging in 90s trash movies, toasted Panettone and lashings of brandy cream, it’s time for a palate cleanse. Here’s mine: The Row SS21.

What’s nice is that you can recreate these looks with stuff you already own. Just super-starch the shirts and steam iron the pants so they have a crease so sharp they could stand up on their own. (more…)

On my radar: Plain Goods

Plain Goods

Uh oh.

New e-commerce discovery of heritage-y staples with a mix of classic brands (Margaret Howell cable knits!) and expertly selected vintage finds.

The Plain Goods site and accompanying Connecticut store are run by interior designer Michael DePerno and fashion brand manager, Andrew Fry, and they shoot all the campaigns locally themselves.

Current faves: their own line of men’s Shetland knitwearwear and these Martiniano loafers – such a cool take on the old school penny.

Browse at your peril….
