Quote of the day: Jerry Hall on Fortnum & Mason

“I loved going shopping in London, like at Fortnum & Mason. They have these guys in uniform with white gloves there and they never rush you. They stand there forever. They’d say, “May I help you, ma’am?” and I’d say, “Mmm… maybe I’ll have this can of soup.” And they’d say, “Oh, that’s a lovely brand, ma’am—one of our most popular.” And they’d hold up the can of soup and follow you around for like an hour holding up cans of soup and boxes of biscuits and jars of all sorts of sauces… “And this one, ma’am, is so lovely with duck.” They’d go on and on. I couldn’t get over it.”

I’m loving this description of Jerry Hall cavorting round Fortnum’s. (more…)

The Tank Must de Cartier for a new generation

Tank Must de Cartier

I’m a complete sucker for a classic Cartier watch, especially one reissued from the archives. This month sees the relaunch of the Tank Must de Cartier, a discreet unisex style originally released in 1977. Created at the height of the quartz watch era, it was designed to appeal to the new young Cartier customer, with its diminutive proportions, entry price point, brightly coloured dials and vermeil (gold-plated silver) hands.

Fast-forward and we’re again seeing this new youthful customer embracing old-school watches. (more…)

Would you shop at a Sotheby’s ‘buy it now’ store?

Sotheby's retail store in New York

Gotta love the millennialisation of auction houses. From online speed auctions to hosting sales of rare Nikes to courting hype curators, the likes of Sotheby’s and Christies are pacing ahead in attracting younger demographics.

The latest initiative is a Sotheby’s boutique. Just opened at Sotheby’s‘ flagship on York Avenue in New York, the bricks-and-mortar store will rely on guest tastemakers to curate pop-up sales that hopefully mimic the adrenaline rush of scoring a hard-to-get grail item from one of its auctions. Would you buy Charvet, L’Uniform, Charlotte Chesnais on Amazon?

L'Uniform bag at Amazon Luxury Stores

We have been debating the ‘can Amazon work as a luxury retailer’ question for almost as long as the ecom behemoth has been around. Funny really, because that’s about the the same length of time as Net-a-Porter and we now don’t question the idea of buying say, a £113,000 Cartier watch online. And yet Amazon has struggled with its high fashion offer despite numerous iterations.

Could things be changing?

The latest attempt is Amazon Luxury Stores*, an in-app experience (U.S only) that recently offered two mini edits by former Colette retail whisperer Sarah Andelman. The ‘pop-up’ edits included products from L’Uniform (above), Charvet, La Bouche Rouge and Charlotte Chesnais. (more…)
