Perfect pairing: socks and loafers

Morjas x Casatlantic loafers

One of the major trends of the year is undoubtedly the deconstructed prep of Miu Miu SS22 – think pleated skirts, loafers and school uniform socks.

While I haven’t succumbed to the pleated skirt* (yet), I’ve enjoyed all the sightings and varied configurations of pleated midi skirt, relaxed-fit trench, loafers and socks. My current trench of choice is this Mackintosh Maili*, a lighter weight than usual, with side splits and no epaulettes to get tangled up in your Hermes Constance New Yorker tote bag. This nutty brown one by & Other Stories* is also lovely (and a good price at £165), or for better size availability, the trad beige version is here*. (more…)

Ideas to steal from menswear aw22 street style

Acielle Style Du Monde Paris AW22 street style

Wow, menswear fashion week street style has moved on from the days of Pitti peacocks strutting in suits and monk-strap shoes. This season’s street style is as out there as you like, with mega oversized proportions (skinny jeans? We don’t know her!), clashing colours, skirts aplenty (layered over trousers) and supersized footwear, whether that’s chunky technical trainers or Rick Owens’ cult platforms*. (Do not talk to me about Crocs).

I’ve picked out the more subdued examples from Acielle’s beautiful shots. Key trends: visible-from-Mars MA1s and puffers (but more glam than gorpcore), elevated utilitarian headgear (balaclavas, bucket hats, beanies in outré colours and proportions), cross-body pouches (again, in the boldest, brightest interpretations) and most unexpected – neck ties! SS22 trend report: Bodycon, but make it body positive

Acielle street style SS22

To get a real sense of next season trends, I like to look at Acielle’s (Aka Style Du Monde) Fashion Month street style photography. Not so much the super-peacock types, but the ones wearing denim with interesting tops and choice accessories. That’s the best way to see a more ‘everyperson’ way of wearing fashion.

My big takeaway for SS22 is the almost universal appetite for barely-there, bodycon and cutaway clothing. It was first evident to me at Collina Strada and Eckhaus Latta at New York Fashion Week. What was interesting about those designers’ treatments was the body positivity expression. Eckhaus Latta especially took a 1990s influence and added a decidedly inclusive 2020s interpretation (below). (more…)

Style du Monde: My kinda street style

Paris Fashion Week street style by Style du Monde

These Paris Fashion Week street style pictures feel much more natural then the usual pre-pandemic performative circus ones. Acielle (aka Style du Monde) is one of my favourite street style photographers and for Vogue.com she captured off-duty models, the odd show-goer (not sure how many audience-facing shows actually took place tbh) and many regular Parisians going about their day.

Things to notice: walkable shoes, hands-free bags, lots of denim… (more…)
