Perfect pairing: socks and loafers

Morjas x Casatlantic loafers

One of the major trends of the year is undoubtedly the deconstructed prep of Miu Miu SS22 – think pleated skirts, loafers and school uniform socks.

While I haven’t succumbed to the pleated skirt* (yet), I’ve enjoyed all the sightings and varied configurations of pleated midi skirt, relaxed-fit trench, loafers and socks. My current trench of choice is this Mackintosh Maili*, a lighter weight than usual, with side splits and no epaulettes to get tangled up in your Hermes Constance New Yorker tote bag. This nutty brown one by & Other Stories* is also lovely (and a good price at £165), or for better size availability, the trad beige version is here*.

While the loafers from Saint Laurent*, Miu Miu* and MaxMara* are certainly desirable, I can personally vouch for the more affordable (and authentic) Sebago penny loafer*, with its sturdy beef roll detail. (I’m steering clear of excess embellishment and extreme chunky soles and keeping is strictly old-school ‘Ametora’* vibes.) These Morjas x Casatlantic loafers are also worth investigating. They’re handmade in Spain and the double leather sole gives them a slight lift. I love the minimalist details and classic proportions.

Onto socks. The right sock-loafer pairing is crucial for looks as well as function. If the shoes and/or socks are not a snug fit, you risk your sock snaking halfway down your shoe every few dozen steps – nothing more annoying! For winter I’ll be pairing my black Sebagos with the chunky comfort of Pairs Scotland Alpaca Everyday socks in navy, charcoal and ‘undyed’ brown. And for autumn – it’s currently 20 degrees in London – white ankle socks from Uniqlo* or Muji go well with a midi skirt or short trouser. Falke’s fine gauge ankle socks are good too, in charcoal* or off-white.

If the loafers are light-coloured or two-tone, then I prefer a light-coloured sock – blush pink or pale blue are fun with a camel chino or pleated skirt, as demonstrated by my Instagram pal @Deavarga (below). For example, I love these Pairs Scotland pink mohair socks from our neighbourhood sock purveyors Supra. These will be a good substitute for my beloved Norse Projects socks which seem to be discontinued. I’ve completely gone off patterned socks as I get older, but I like tone-on-tone colours – like Linda V Wright’s neutral ensemble (below), which would be just as good in a more statement colour.
