THE DRG STYLE INDEX: Uniqlo, John Lobb, Dries van Noten, Niijournal, WattsWhat and more!
Here’s the latest weekly DRG STYLE INDEX ranking, a round-up of the brands and industry stories currently buzzing on my radar…
1. WHAT TO BUY FROM UNIQLO X J.W.ANDERSON
Uniqlo unveiled its J.W. Anderson LifeWear collaboration last week, which will launch with 33 pieces in September in the U.K. My guess is that the menswear will sell better than the women’s and those ruffle skirts will get left on the rail. I love the tartan Ultra Light Down Jacket as a vivid insulation piece to wear under another layer.
2. JOHN LOBB FOR WOMEN
Yes it’s happening. John Lobb shoes for women. Creative director Paula Gerbase has produced her first women’s shoes, available from early September. Meet the Rowan, Alba, Willow & Hawkes. (If you need to know the prices, you probably can’t afford them. Sigh…)
3. DRIES IN MOTION
Damn, the Dries van Noten film won’t be showing in UK cinemas! But you can catch it on DVD and iTunes (but what fun is that?). This SHOWstudio interview with documentarian Reiner Holzemer will make you want to see it even more…
4. NIIJOURNAL MAGAZINE AND EXHIBITION
The best way to launch a mag these days is on Kickstarter, it seems. Campbell Addy’s magazine Niijournal started as an exploration of racial diversity while studying at Central St Martin’s. Its second issue will launch with a Kickstarter campaign and an exhibition at Protein Studios (31 New Inn Yard, EC2A 3EY) from 28 to 30 July.
5. WATTSWHAT MAGAZINE
Another new magazine, available for pre-order now, is WattsWhat, an independent magazine for grown up men that’s not all about watches and yachts. There’s a ton of illustration in it and I love this cover illustration by Andy Tuohy. You can check out my profile of Bella Freud and her menswear strategy inside. Pre-order here…
6: CLINIQUE X JONATHAN ADLER
Love this colourful collab from Clinique and Jonathan Adler, available now. Go all-out or go home, yeah?
IN OTHER NEWS…
Teens and malls. For every article bemoaning the death of the mall, there’s another telling us teens love them. Here’s the latest from Racked.
Would you sleep in a Muji hotel? I would. The Japanese behemoth is opening hotels in Shenzhen, Beijing and Tokyo.
Does the world need another social network? Amazon thinks it does. Amazon Spark is a shoppable social network (available in the U.S to Amazon Prime app users) aimed at diehard shopaholics. Business Insider has the low-down here (spoiler: it’s a little clunky).
Liking the idea of MOMA’s autumn exhibition, Items: Is Fashion Modern?, unpacking the timeless appeal of style typologies including the sari, the LBD, the leather jacket and the blue jean. Read more on WWD.

Uniqlo – definitely thinking the striped ruffle skirt with matching shirt and the graphic tshirt. 19 Sept release date for US – same as UK, but as usual, cannot find the Australian release date so I can buy for the grown up children!!
Hope to get to MoMA exhibition but would love to see the Tate Soul of a Nation more than anything at the moment.

I am going to Soul of a Nation next week! Expecting great things…
