I could be wrong, but I had the sneaking feeling that some of the 20-year-old bloggers at the Judy Blame X Jo Malone London breakfast were wondering, “who’s that funny fellow sat at the end of the table tangled up in ribbons and buttons?” I, on the other hand was a little too thrilled.

Judy Blame is of course, the brilliant jewellery-designer-slash-stylist-slash-80s-icon whose bricolage-luxe aesthetic has had wide reaching influence across the fashion-sphere. (more…)

There’s a lot of buzz around Russian designer-artist Gosha Rubchinkiy right now and the ICA has tapped into the curiosity by inviting him to discuss his multi-faceted approach to fashion at its Culture Now talks event on August 29th 31st. I would give you the details, except the tickets have already sold out. Soz. [UPDATE: The curator, Angela Hill has left a comment to point out that the talk is actually on the 29th and there are now a few more tickets available.]

Nostalgic ephemera: useless crap or valuable treasure?

David Bowie Is at the V&A was a brilliant trip down memory lane as well as a peek into the brain of the enigma that is Bowie. However much we see of him, do we really feel like we know the man? Apparently, he kept an archive of everything he had ever done from his early youth.

Every song lyric, sketch, photo, sleeve design was carefully stored for…what? He didn’t know at his early age that he would become an icon of his time, but I guess the ambition was there.

Looking at the vitrines curated by a cast of London creatives at the ICA Off-Site project, ‘A Journey Through London Subculture – 1980s to now’, it’s clear that a lot of people have also kept the ephemeral fragments that sum up their artistic journey. From flyers to Polaroids, to scratchy notes and stickers, what to some looks like old junk, is of intrinsic value, especially in the digital age of cloud storage.
