Cannes red carpet: garconnes do it better

What is it about the Cannes red carpet that’s so much more refined than other red carpets? Don’t answer that. I think I know the answer already.

American premieres and awards are super-planned and super-commercial, all about diamonds and deals. Somehow Cannes just seems a bit cooler. Here’s the evidence; Jane Birkin and Charlotte Gainsbourg in classic garconne style – Birkin in Celine and Gainsbourg in Saint Laurent. (more…)

On my radar: anti-leather bags

Rue de Verneuil

I used a tote bag for the first time in months last week. Like practically everyone else, I’ve not commuted since March, so I’ve been getting by with pockets for my daily walkabout, or a compact J&M Davidson camera bag if I’m going further than the coffee shop at the end of my road.

Isabelle Huppert – yes she Cannes

Isabelle Huppert wearing Saint Laurent by Anthony Vacarello at the Kering dinner, Cannes 2017

I never look at red carpet dressing, but I’ve just had my inbox flooded with pictures from the Cannes party circuit. What was Kristen Stewart’s stylist thinking with that bizarre Chanel contraption? And Rihanna’s with this Adam Selman upholstery?

While it was sad to see some of my favourite French actresses looking trashy af in Saint Laurent by Anthony Vacarello at the Kering dinner, the situation redeemed itself thanks to Isabelle Huppert.

Here she is looking spectacular but not try-hard in a floor length Saint Laurent ivory crepe gown with draped and pleated waist detail and a black leather belt.

The black mani and immaculate red lip are equally sublime.
