I first got wind of the Danish DTC jeweller (pay wall) a few weeks ago. Founded by Caroline Chalmer and Mie Ejdrup, two retail strategy veterans, with influencer Pernille Teisbæk on board as a creative advisor, it’s the clean, serene jewellery etailer for the #OldCeline set and, crucially, the woman who buys fine jewellery for herself. Ouch! LVMH is hoping to disrupt the above kind of thinking, a reaction to the recent news of its $16 billion Tiffany takeover deal. Hard luxury (watches and jewellery) is an interesting category and one that’s ripe for reinvention. Louis Vuitton has been amping up its high jewellery of late with the 2018 appointment of Francesca Amfitheatrof as its artistic director of watches and jewellery (coincidentally previously the design director at Tiffany) and a new line in fine jewellery. I think I first read about Paula Gerbase’s own name brand in The Gentlewoman. Known for her womenswear line, 1205, as well as being the creative director of John Lobb, her style is certainly very gentlewomanly.
