THE DRG STYLE INDEX: Coach, Ralph Lauren, Glossier, Unmade, Marks & Spencer, J.W.Anderson
Here’s the latest weekly DRG STYLE INDEX ranking, a round-up of the brands currently buzzing on my radar…
1. THE COACH COMEBACK
Sounds like Coach is killing it with its current revamp. The Robin Report unpacks its recipe for success, which owes a lot to Stuart Vevers’ brand of new youthful (read: millennial) luxury…
2. RALPH’S NEW WRIST CANDY
It seems there’s a growing market for a certain type of woman who appreciates old school luxury and craftsmanship with a gently masculine twist. Ralph Lauren taps into this well with its new RL888 collection of watches, its first designed especially for women. Taking its name from the Ralph Lauren womenswear store at 888 Madison Avenue, it has a classic sensibility, updated with a whole array of straps (steel, gold, or coloured satin, leather and grosgrain), plus a choice of steel, rose gold and diamond bezels. There’s an increase in women buying luxury timepieces for themselves and this fits squarely into that trend – top price (for the rose gold) is £7,150. Available at the New Bond Street store from June.
3. GET THE GLOSS
While we wait (and wait) for Glossier to arrive UK-side, we can but watch in envy as the beauty brand unveils yet more product newness. Never mind the balms, even the boxes for Glossier’s new flavoured lip trio are works of art. Buy them here.
4. UNMADE FOR YOU
Unmade knitwear has had a lot of press this week, not only for its high-impact graphics but also for its refreshing approach to design that ‘puts the customer right at the heart of the process’. The innovative knitwear brand lets you be the designer to produce (almost) one-off pieces by hacking a knitting machine’s computer programme. It’s brilliant, beautiful and incredibly playful. Check it out here.
5. M&S SAYS ‘BUY IT NOW’
Marks & Spencer unveiled its AW16 collection this week and jumped on the ‘buy now, wear now’ bandwagon to give it a publicity push. Before I’d even seen the look book pictures, I’d spotted and admired this silk shirt already in the Autograph department, alongside a zip-through leather jacket. At £69 and £249, the cut and finish are spot on (although if I was nit-picking I’d say the jacket sleeves are a tad long, hence the model ruching them up). If M&S can continue in the vein of the press pictures and tidy up the store layout (everyone’s main bugbear), it could well get its groove back.
6. J.W.ANDERSON’S TRUNK SHOW
If you’re a detail geek, you’ll appreciate Matches Fashion’s new ‘digital trunk show’, which has the designer talking through an exclusive collection in detail on video. Arriving on 19th May is the new Pierce bag from J.W.Anderson, which gets its retail debut on Matchesfashion.com.
