YSL Nu is the latest in the line of anti-flawless make-up ranges for Gen Z (but Gen X might enjoy it too)
YSL Nu*, the new make-up-meets-skincare hybrid from YSL Beauty is one of the best (dare I say ‘authentic’) iterations of the current ‘real skin’ beauty ranges I’ve seen yet. While the photography adheres to the ‘Glossier’ playbook (think extreme close-ups, racially diverse casting, un-perfect skin) it’s also clearly unretouched and the lighting is fairly unforgiving. Yet the images are striking and the cast cool enough to make this a compelling sell.
According to Hypebae, these five items were created with Gen Z for Gen Z. Which is funny because they also seem like they would appeal to the non-Botox inclined portion of Gen X, with their nod to 90s-era David Sims and Juergen Teller editorials. (Ok, let’s just say it – Heroin Chic.)
As is de riguer with the current crop of Gen-Z make-up launches, the marketing copy is all about being yourself with its #bareitproudly #myskinmysignature hashtags. Which is noble, but at this point I do think needs a little differentiation.
The line of five face products (it doesn’t include eye, lip, or brow-specific products at this point) is priced from $34-$38:
The YSL Nu Glow In Balm* is a pearlescent oil-in-water highlighter and moisturiser
The Nu Blotting Lotion* is a priming lotion combining a jellified water texture with mattifying powder
The Nu Tone Corrector*, designed to ‘correct pores’, dark circles, redness and pigmentation, comes in three colours; rosy, golden and green
The Nu Bare Look Tint* is a tinted moisturiser meets BB cream that hydrates with hyaluronic acid and brightening mallow
The Nu Dewy Mist* is a hydrating face spray containing hyaluronic acid, jojoba oil and pomegranate oil extract.
The YSL Nu line isn’t available in the UK yet, but can be found in the U.S here*.
