Street style, but make it corporate
Love this New York Times photo-feature on what Wall Street is wearing now.
New York Times picture editor Brent Murray worked with photographer Melodie Jeng on this Bill Cunningham-style photo study to ascertain the current corporate dress code of the city’s New Normal.
So where are we?
Post-pandemic we’re seeing bankers and lawyers loosening up in slim chinos, tieless shirts and ballet flats, with additional sightings of trainers, Telfar totes and something called a Lululemon ABC pant* (aka a 5-pocket jean designed for all-day comfort). With fewer in-person meetings, it’s more acceptable to swap out stiff suits for a smart chino and knitted polo.
According to John C. Williams, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York (and noted sneaker nerd), the Fed encourages employees to be true to their personal style and bring their ‘authentic self’ to work. “When people can be themselves, they do their best work.”
The funny thing is that while corporate America looks to be dressing down, the rest of fashion (read: under 25s) is looking to retro Wall Street style for elevated fashion pointers. I touched on this before, when reports emerged of the new Gossip Girl’s yuppie-chic obsession.
For young people, fantasising about nabbing the now-mythical corner office while power-suited and booted is a seductive kind of cosplay. I guess when it’s a choice rather than an assigned uniform, corporatecore has a whole other, romantic appeal.
