Ready for the drop
Is it me manifesting the 1924-style optimism of the deco-era or is there really a rising tide of flapper-esque dresses and hip-riding silhouettes on the horizon? Putting aside my theory that the 2020s hasn’t properly started yet and that 2024 could be The Year (admittedly based on nothing more than blind hope), the evidence is pointing to the latter.
Phoebe Philo’s low-waisted leather blouson (top) illustrates the point, echoed by Burberry’s low-belted SS24 trenches. Prada’s delightful organza ‘Haze’ dresses (below) obviously speak for themselves. And let’s not forget that the instantly-sold-out Chanel exhibition at the V&A is serving 20s garconne fabulosity with drop waist looks that wouldn’t seem out of place on the 2024 runway (below).
Styling-wise, there are all sorts of tricks to tease the eye south. Look up some old Pamela Hanson editorials (below) for fun ways to play with volume and layered knitwear. And Tibi’s Amy Smilovic has the right idea with her how-to Reels – using an oversized knit to disguise the rolled-up waist of a shortened skirt while experimenting with proportions. (The sweater-with-elbow-slits-as-scarf* hack is genius too.)
I’m sure you have a slouchy sweater or two already in rotation. If not, size up on this rib one from COS* or the charcoal funnel neck from Joseph* (currently on sale).
