Weekender uncensored

I had such a nice chat with video director W.I.Z a couple of days ago, who called me following this recent i-D piece I contributed to. The piece is part of a series of interviews with fashion bods on their favourite pop videos. I agonised for ages over it because, well, don’t we all have dozens of favourites? In the end, I went for ‘Weekender’, an 18 minute long mini-film from 1992, that W.I.Z directed for the band Flowered Up. You can read all about it in the link, but I very much enjoyed researching the band because frankly, I couldn’t remember much from 1992. (more…)

Iris Apfel on Matisse

Have you booked your ticket for Henri Matisse: The Cut-Outs yet? Do go, I grumbled a bit about the £18 ticket price but someone pointed out to me that the rest of the museum is free, which I guess is a very good point.

Anyway I couldn’t not share this gem from the Tate, who rocked up at Iris Apfel’s house to film her Matisse-inspired wardrobe. As she says, anyone who works with colour has to have been inspired by Matisse – how could they not?

Watch this: a documentary about Fashion Week street style

I just watched Garage Magazine’s mini documentary on Style Bubble but in case you haven’t seen it, here it is again. Filming began a year ago and the result is a good 9-minute sum-up of the Fashion Week street style phenomenon. Tim Blanks makes most of the commentary but Imran Amed from Business of fashion is also featured, as is Susie Bubble and Phil Oh.

This London Fashion Week, I had a conversation with a well known street style photographer who mentioned that they have noticed a change. Some of their regulars have now decided they don’t want to be photographed, they’re actively ignoring street style photographers, even when in the past they were quite chummy. It’s not surprising to me. What die-hard fashionista wants to be seen embracing something once it’s been tainted with the naff brush? (I’m not saying street style is naff, but the bad publicity in this context could have that effect.)
