THE DRG STYLE INDEX: BURBERRY, DIPTYQUE, SELF-PORTRAIT, DOVE
Here’s the latest weekly DRG STYLE INDEX ranking, a round-up of the brands currently buzzing on my radar…
1. JUST BURBERRY
I got to attend the unveiling of the new Burberry Christmas ad in the Regent Street flagship on Tuesday and as expected, it was fun, stylish and very British. And it totally made me want to see Billy Elliot. The celeb-filled event completely overshadowed the week’s other Burberry news, that the brand is consolidating all its sub-brands under one big Burberry-checked umbrella. So no more Burberry Brit, London or Prorsum – just ‘Burberry’ (which is what we all called it anyway). Fashionista has the story.
2. DIPTYQUE X OLYMPIA LE TAN
The wonderful Olympia le Tan has collaborated with the equally wonderful Diptyque on a mini range launching in France in January. The rose-violet scented line, ‘Rosaviola’ will include a candle (complete with faux-embroidered label), a solid perfume and a scented disc, with prices starting at €30 for a 70g candle.
3. THE RISE OF SELF-PORTRAIT
“I could see such big potential in launching a contemporary brand that moves at the speed of the high street, but has a luxurious quality,” says Han Chong, founder of Self-Portrait, the mid-price label that’s cleaning up at Selfridges, Net-a-Porter and Dover Street Market. Chong has hit on the perfect sweet spot of directional design, decent production values and upscale branding aligned with an affordable pricepoint. Read Business Of Fashion to see how he’s doing it.
4. DOVE SAYS ‘LOVE YOUR CURLS’
I’ve only just caught on to Dove’s super-cute curly hair emojis. WGSN unpacks why they’re a masterstroke in marketing.
