On my radar: Alexis Bittar
Where is the Alexis Bittar jewelled notebook line? Give me pens! Give me agendas! Fuck it, bring back Rolodexes! I know I’m not the only person living for the – frankly genius – Alexis Bittar Instagram miniseries*. The bite-sized antics of fictional ’upper east side terror and icon’ Margeaux Goldrich, hilariously observed vignettes that show the fashionista terrorising her revolving door of personal assistants, is a masterclass in Instagram marketing.
Each episode (can you call a minute-long clip an episode?) is brilliantly written and shot, then costumed – with accompanying ASMR audio – with statement Alexis Bittar necklaces, bangles, earrings and handbags. My favourite recent episode involved writer Jalil Johnson as a short-lived assistant reprimanded for taking notes on his phone instead of in a leatherbound agenda, the way we all know the chicest people take their notes. Alexis Bittar, please note this: give the people the merch they want!
Seriously though, just what is it about ghastly fashion bosses that we love to idolise? From Ab Fab’s Edina and Patsy to The Devil Wears Prada’s Miranda Priestley (shortly coming to the London stage) to Kell On Earth’s Kelly Cutrone (who herself had a cameo in the Alex Bittar skits), there’s a not so-fine line between assertive and abusive that we simply love to see crossed. The New York Times managed to get an answer of sorts.
“I was Jules,” says Sasha Charnin Morrison, once an assistant like Margeaux’s and now a freelance writer and digital content creator referring to Margeaux’s ex-assistant. “That was my life. You never knew on a Friday if you were fired, but you would always come back for more abuse on Monday.” Patricia Black, the actress who plays Margaux all too convincingly offers, “we all worked for somebody who has been a Margeaux or had a mother who was that. These relationships exist, so why not lighten up and make fun of them?”
If you want a palate cleanser though, I can’t recommend this Oscar de la Renta documentary highly enough. A Sense of Beauty is a breathtakingly beautiful making of the Pre-fall 2024 collection, showing just how much love and care goes into a collection that we never usually get to see. Watch here.
