Spring forward – ten trends to try for 2017
OK, I know trends and seasons are ‘dead’ and all that but I can’t help it, trend-speak is ingrained in me! I’m counting the days* til I can shrug off the sixteen layers of padded coats and woollens and prance around in ‘crisp cotton shirts’ and barely there shorts. (Yeah right, I have not worn shorts in this country for at least ten years.)
So here’s my own, personal what-I-want-to-wear-this-spring top ten. Any faves?
1/ TENT-SIZED SHIRT I like the look of this voluminous Vetements shirt (below) and I have a too-big white poplin Mr Start shirt somewhere that will fit the bill nicely. I’ve hardly worn said shirt before because I usually iron it and it just looks wrong all perfectly pressed but imperfect in fit. I think if I crumple it more, I’ll be able to get away with the oversized proportions. I’m willing to give it a try anyway…
2/ SOMETHING SENSIBLE WITH SOMETHING FRIVOLOUS Prada’s schoolgirl cardigans worn with frou-frou marabou feathers were utterly adorable. Perfectly reasonable office attire, surely…?
3/ MINI FRINGE A too-short fringe accentuates strong brows and the two together make a winning combination. For proper brow grooming I highly rate these untinted gels – Browcote, MAC Brow Set (in Clear), and Dior Diorshow Brow Styler Gel (in Transparent). And for filling in gaps I quite fancy trying Charlotte Tilbury’s Legendary Brows with its teeny tiny precision brush, as championed by Nadine Baggott. I don’t like overdone ‘Instagram eyebrows’ but these gels give a fuller but naturally groomed effect.
4/ KJAER WEIS BEAUTY On my list to try: Kjaer Weis organic beauty, recently arrived at Net-a-Porter. There’s a big push for luxuriously presented organic beauty right now and this also comes in refillable packaging. It’s free from gluten, parabens, silicone and synthetic fragrances. Buy it HERE and HERE.
5/ CHAMPION SWEATS No not those Vetements peculiarities, but the proper classic ones. Or even the new iteration in sunny millennial shades of pink and banana.
6/ SOCKS AND CHOOS This is one of my favourite looks of all time – ankle-strapped pointy flats with ankle socks – and Jimmy Choo (below) makes the best. This looks great with long pleated skirts, but I’ll wear them with my ankle-swinging Nudie jeans, which are dark dark indigo and have a flattering, high waisted Marilyn Monroe cut. Buy them HERE.
7/ MARC JACOBS AIR BLUSH This isn’t in any way new but I got it last year and it’s the best product for giving dull skin a bit of colour. I use ‘Flesh and Fantasy’ (below, top right) which is not quite a blusher (not pink enough) and not really a bronzer but it does the job of both, making you look more ‘alive’ with the most delicate, finest-of-finely-milled textures. (I use it with the Zoeva Defined Buffer 103 brush). Buy it HERE.
8/ WHITE JEANS Maria Chiuri Grazia put these on the Dior SS17 catwalk (below) affording them a new high fashion relevance. I like white jeans straight or slightly oversized and without any stretch, rips or weird embellishments. I’ll wear my white 501s, but the Citizens of Humanity Emerson Slim Boyfriend Ankle jeans also look pretty good.
9/ OLD SCHOOL LEATHERGOODS So Louis Vuitton is apparently set to up its cool factor among hypebeasts with a Supreme collaboration. I haven’t seen it but the very idea of such trendiness makes me want to run away and bury myself in an old school LV monogrammed pochette…!
10/ PRETTY GREENS Green is going to be the colour of the year according to Pantone, whose ‘Greenery’, an uplifting apple green denotes ‘reassurance amid a tumultous social and political environment’. Soft grassy greens actually look pretty good with my skintone but I don’t wear them often enough. I’m going to look out for tees and cotton Victoriana blouses to wear with white jeans and Supergas in the summer.
