Positive beauty: the perfect mouth (updated)
It’s good to see how La Bouche Rouge is rounding out its offer of highly desirable sustainable lipsticks. The brand began with its distinctive leather-cased refillable lipsticks in every shade of red. It’s recently gone into Harrods* and this autumn it arrived in Dover Street Parfums Market, the new beauty concept store based in Paris. For that, it created a special La Bouche Rouge black lipstick; it’s no surprise that Colette’s Sarah Andelman consulted on that attention-grabbing store.
At the SS20 press days, I got a first look at the extended lip line coming to La Bouche Rouge (above). Joining the serum-infused lipsticks (the first lipsticks made without micro plastic), there will be a plastic-free lip pencil coming in March, plus a lip scrub/balm and a brush. Combined, they’re billed as La Bouche Parfait (‘the perfect mouth’).
The line is extremely expensive but when you’re an indie brand experimenting with innovative formulas and packaging, you have to be. (Here’s a good breakdown of the brand.) Thanks to economies of scale, until an idea filters down to the mass market and the product can be made in larger volumes, the costs of experimentation remain high.
In other luxury ‘clean beauty’ news, Gucci Westman showed us a glimpse of her new lip product this week. The Westman Atelier Lip Suede compact (below) is formulated with 100% natural ingredients, including collagen-boosting biomimetic peptides, natural cold pressed cherry oil and marula oils to nourish, protect and plump lips. The marketing copy is speaking to me for sure.
Westman Atelier is another ‘clean beauty’ advocate. It’s a term that’s proved polarising but means that synthetic ingredients and preservatives deemed unnecessary, or likely to aggravate sensitive skin or harm the environment are replaced with natural alternatives. For the Westman Atelier Lip Suede compact, petroleum jelly wax is switched for a blend of plant derived waxes and the overall result promises a silky matte, weightless finish.
