AW19 trend report: Notes on knits

Tiina The Store cashmere by Kurt Markus

A heads up on knitwear as just like jeans, I’m always searching for the one find that will change my life. And no surprises that the first gem comes from Tiina The Store.

Tiina Laakonen’s blissful emporium sells the perfect mix of exacting luxury staples and niche curiosities. So alongside the Chimala jeans and Zanini dresses, you can now buy her very own sweaters (above and below). And cardigans. Lovely oversized cashmere swaddles in heather grey, buff and periwinkle blue. And modelled by Christy Turlington no less…

Another knitwear brand that keeps popping up is Extreme Cashmere (below). Capturing the zeitgeist for gender-free, size-inclusive style, these come in one size and nail the sweet spot between unchallenging silhouettes and masterful colour-play. Yes they’re expensive, because they’re responsibly made using suppliers that comply with the Business Social Compliance Initiative. I love everything but especially the Bourgeois chunky sweater in Wave, the stretch-cashmere tees and the shrunken-fit ‘little cardigan‘.

Also on the eco-aware front, Bamford’s latest knitwear is centred around sustainable practices, including unbleached cashmeres, seamfree handknits (that produce less waste) and Greenpeace-approved ‘detox yarns’ – so-called because they come from spinners that have reduced harmful chemicals from their spinning processes. The supersoft baby alpaca sweater* is my pick of the bunch, to be worn with Bamford’s biodegradable Rufus ‘wool denim’ jacket.

And I haven’t forgotten the guys. Mr DRG is partial to these indestructable Heimat virgin wool sweaters and I’m hankering for them too. For something softer, check out these brushed Shetland beauties from Taisce (pronounced ‘TASH-ka’, below). And finally, I love this collaboration with The English Difference and Hikaru Noguchi that I spotted in The Garbstore earlier this week. Made from extra fine merino wool, each cardigan* has been individually darned and hand embroidered to beautiful effect. (Side note: V neck cardigans are officially a thing.)
