What to buy from tomas maier and uniqlo 2018
Heads up: the tomas maier and uniqlo collaboration is here only a few days away. If you don’t know who Tomas Maier is, he’s the designer who has been quietly toiling as creative director of Bottega Veneta since 2001. But he’s also well known for his own line of swimwear and casual-luxe separates, which are essential sartorial kit for any self-respecting island hopper.
Uniqlo is great at tapping into designer collaborations that may not be at buzzy as, say, H&M’s Moschino hook-up, or Ikea’s Off-White line, but deliver solid profitable collections of pieces that you’ll want to repeat-wear beyond one season. It has a good track record with French designers – Christophe Lemaire and Ines de la Fressange for example – and while Maier isn’t French, his collaboration with Uniqlo has a similarly classic desirability.
What to buy from the tomas maier and uniqlo 2018 collaboration when it lands on May 17th (18th in the U.S.)? The dresses are dead certs including this gathered shirt dress in cotton poplin (top) with full sleeves and a city-to-beach above-the-knee length. I also love this versatile chiffon number (below, a very good price at £34.90) and this tomato red long extra-fine cotton shirt (below, £34.90) – perfect for après-beach drinks. And I really like the look of the short-sleeved polo sweater in a vibrant mango sorbet shade (above) to energise khaki chinos or denim. The juicy fruit coloured cashmeres and stand collar shirts also look promising.
Meanwhile, the swimwear is obviously going to do well. I personally prefer the sporty cross-back one-piece (below), but there are also block-coloured rash guards and mix-and-match bikinis. For guys, it’s all about the perfect pocket tee in Supima cotton (below), the sharp collared ‘AIRism’ polo shirt and the classic grey cashmeres.
The collection is available online here or in London in the Oxford Street, Regent Street, High Street Kensington, Westfield London and Westfield Stratford stores.

I bought the chiffon dress and the straight orange. The link didn’t work for gathered. I also bought the flight jacket and the Palm T-shirt. I wonder what I’ll keep

Thanks Yvonne, I love all the sunset colours. I want to know how the chiffon dress turns out! I haven’t been able to get to a Uniqlo store yet but will try and get a close look over the weekend (royal wedding mania permitting…)
