Everything Japan: J-Wellness, Terahaku, Yasuko Takahashi and more

David Bowie and stylist Yasuko Takahashi

With the Tokyo Olympics happening this summer, the spotlight is firmly on Japan.

For starters, I’m looking forward to the V&A’s Kimono: Kyoto to Catwalk exhibition, which opens on 29th February. With its vast archives, this is the kind of exhibition the V&A does really well, time travelling from rare 17th and 18th century kimono to contemporary streetwear via Kawakubo and Galliano – that’s got be good!

Meanwhile, Sunspel is also feeling the Japan love this spring, collaborating with three contemporary Japanese brands – 45R, N.Hoolywood and Beams – on a capsule collection of men’s and womenswear. I like this 45R interpretation of the Sunspel Sun and Cloud logo, using an indigo dye cloud placement on a white cotton tee (below). All products will be available in Sunspel* shops and online from 7th March. (more…)

If you love Hugh Holland’s cult Locals Only book, here’s a new Hugh Holland book (and exhibition) of never-before-seen black and white skater-in-action photos to help you beat the autumn blues.

Documenting the early Southern California skateboard scene of the 70s, ‘Silver. Skate. Seventies‘ really encapsulates the wild spirit of the early youth tribe – and for me sums up why it’s still such a seductive culture today. (more…)

Press trip: 40 years of the Agnes b snap cardigan

 Agnes b snap cardigan exhibition

“Upstairs in a vintage boutique in Tokyo, where most of the clothes were from Comme des Garcons, Margiela, Sacai, Yamamoto, the proprietor had an entire rail of your cardigans. He said they went with everything and that when stocks ran low, people would start to get anxious!”

This is writer Sophie Fontanel penning a sort of love letter to Agnès b in the Assouline book, The Snap Cardigan. (more…)
