Me+Em’s Goop-style glow-up
Has Me+Em had a secret Goop-tinged glow-up without me realising?
The successful British brand is going from strength to strength, catering for a mid-tier busy working mum customer with a contemporary edge. But stopping by its new-ish Marylebone store, it suddenly felt less ‘Marylebone mom’ and more LA-London luxury-lite-core.
The store itself does a lot of heavy lifting. It’s beautiful; light-filled, spacious and fabulously merchandised. But the product also looks really good. Most appealing are all the whites and off-whites; easy neutrals that facilitate what founder Clare Hornby describes as “fashion Lego,” aka pieces that fit together and multitask across seasons. So, cashmere tees*, loose, short-sleeve knits*, peasant blouses*. and immaculately cut slim-fitting white raglan tees*.
The glow-up comes from some especially ‘youthful’ pieces – such as these cropped-under-the-ribcage tees* – that are quite a leap from the tailoring and work-to-weekend-wear that Me+Em might be known for. But they’re tempered by a desirable selection of classic sunglasses*, the best suede Mary Jane flats*, plus my hero piece, an extremely useful reversible cotton-linen tote* (I love the slim straps) in bitter chocolate/black.
Me+Em prices are great for the product, sitting between Whistles and Joseph. If it can align its ecommerce creative direction with the store design, advertising (courtesy of Kate Phelan’s styling and Malgosia’s modelling) and cooler pieces on offer, it could easily be an affordable destination for the woman who aspires to the more casual fare of Khaite, The Row and Toteme but on a friendlier budget.
