Shop the post: summer sale picks

Studio Nicholson shirt

OMG OMG it’s actually happening. That rarer-than-rare event. A proper, more-than-one-day sweltering heatwave! In London! This calls for a rethink of my ‘Tods Girl Summer’ wardrobe since the ‘summer knits’ and waterproofs don’t quite fit the 30-degrees-and-rising brief.

Thankfully, the sales are starting, so I’m here to help with a couple of hot-in-the-city pointers. While the multi-brand sites aren’t great for sale purchases did everyone freak out ahead of the tariffs and panic buy? there are some good discounts if you persevere.

Long shorts are becoming my summer uniform, but white takes them up a notch. In particular, Studio Nicholson has the monopoly on the oversize silhouette that manages to look at once relaxed and polished and these textured linen shorts* don’t resemble a crumbled paper bag – result! Leaning slightly more sporty, Margaret Howell’s MHL cotton-linen scout shorts (below) have a pull-on ease that I love. Alternatively, Jil Sander’s cotton Bermudas* have a formal edge, while Nili Lotan’s does the same job in denim*. (Plus, much more affordable although not on sale: Mango’s white denim long shorts*.)

The perfect footwear accompaniment to long shorts is the fisherman sandal, still going strong for another summer. Even with 30% off, the Church’s Kelsey sandal* (below) is still a hefty price, but I can vouch for them as a smart, comfortable and perennial summer city staple, especially if you walk a lot. (Side note: a handy tip if a particular shoe tends to rub and cause blisters, attach a Compeed sticker to the offending area inside the shoe instead of to your foot. They stick quite securely, so you’ll only need one Compeed instead of several.)

A boxy cotton shirt is another non-negotiable for summer city heatwave-wear. Studio Nicholson* and Lemaire* are the go-tos for calm neutrals, while Max Mara’s hydrangea pink (buy it here* or here) brings the vacation vibes.

Also essential: a tote bag for the Evian spray, water bottle and handheld electric fan. Longchamp’s boxy totes are legendary (just wipe clean!) and especially summer-appropriate in orange* (below) and cedar green* at 50% off.

Finally, for the beauty bag, This Works’ rose-scented dry leg oil* is currently on sale, as is Margaret Dabbs’ brilliant foot file*. Chanel’s nail polishes aren’t on sale yet, but as soon as they are, I would snap up a bottle in Incendiaire*, a shiny, happy-making poppy red that’s ideal for toes.
