Wardrobe update: the thin belt and the fresh white slice
Two very easy winter styling updates to consider if you fancy some newness without a mega cash outlay.
First, a thin leather belt. Thanks to Phoebe Philo, The Row and Louis Vuitton, the big boxy tailored coat is where the smart money is right now, but instead of buttoned, it’s worn wrapped and belted with a one-inch leather belt.
Most of the examples I’ve seen are on double-breasted coats, but the same trick can be applied to single breasted coats (I’ve just rediscovered my 20-year-old APC overcoat) or to boxy blazers (Styleinthestix has the right idea). Konfekt recommended Swedish label, Teurn Studios’ minimalist belt in a recent newsletter, while Loewe’s logo belt* is sleek and graphic. A super-long belt can be worn with the end tucked or looped in interesting ways, or a double-wrap belt* adds double the interest.
Obviously, you can also wear your skinny belt with trousers. I always wear my MHL ‘roller buckle’ belt with jeans to give them that veneer of polish and this also applies to white denim.
Another subtle styling trick is the way the buckle is placed off-centre to accentuate these paper bag The Row trousers (below) – such a good detail. Plus, shout out to Raey, whose men’s trousers* have a genius double belt loop design, allowing for a skinny belt or wide belt as preferred. More of this please!
The humble crew neck and V-neck sweater are also enjoying a revival thanks mostly to Prada. A commenter on Instagram noted the importance of the bright white tee (below), a sliver of white layered beneath the sweater that frames the face in a ring of light.
This ‘fresh white slice’ trick is especially handy if your sweater is a colour that jars with your skin tone, such as beige, royal blue, lime yellow or chilli red. The visible neckline of the white tee serves as a buffer to prevent skin tone clash. It’s actually quite hard to get white T-shirts that are high necked enough, but Uniqlo U’s crew neck tee (UK link here* or US link here*) does the job.
