On my radar: Wanderlust fragrances

Wanderlust perfumes - Voyeur Verde by Maya Njie

The annual escape has begun! Nah, not the hell of Heathrow airport, but the olfactory escape of citrus colognes and wanderlust perfumes. While last year’s big summer scent was all about the return to eau-de-sun-sea-and-sex beachy hedonism, I feel this summer leans more to Mediterranean citruses and herbaceous green notes.

If that sounds like your jam, I’d highly recommend Bergamot from Perfumer H (below). The latest citrus addition to Lyn Harris’s scent stable, the fresh tingle of Calabrian bergamot is accompanied by juicy Sicilian lemons, French lavender and incense. Classic, elegant and wearable as always. Fun fact: you can now buy Perfumer H from its new Paris store in the Marais – add it to the itinerary! On which note (pun intended), if you’re looking for a new scent to accompany your romantic Paris city break, consider Chanel’s L’Eaux Paris-Paris* (below). This eau de toilette line is all about destinations and the scents are super-light and casual. L’Eaux Paris-Paris is suitably flirty, combining top notes of fizzy pink pepper, lemon and mandarin with a powdery rose heart and patchouli base.

Bergamot is proving quite the popular note for faraway fragrances this summer. Off-White marked its entry into the beauty industry with the April launch of four EDPs. Go for Solution Number 2* if you’re after a gender-neutral citrus-first scent. It’s suitably zesty on first sniff, with bergamot and tangerine top notes, grounded in ginger, coriander and sexy musk. Maya Njie also embraces the Hot Bergamot Summer mood with this year’s launch, Voyeur Verde* (top). Think sundowner cocktails with this sultry combo of bergamot, mandarin and cypress trees underscored with the delicious exotica of leather and patchouli. This is my current favourite.

A little further afield, Costa Brazil’s first fragrance, Aroma* (below), evokes the intrepid explorer-core of the Brazilian rainforest. If you love the earthy-meets-zesty skin scent of Costa Brazil’s cult skincare oils, consider Aroma the official, longer-wearing version. (Heads-up: There’s a rollerball oil formula coming as well.)

Of course, we can’t talk summer smells without mentioning Dries van Noten’s* menu of ten EDPs – recently landed at Selfridges. Santal Greenery* and Cannabis Patchouli* (both below) are the freshest, juiciest scents, with Santal Greenery a figgy affair topped with bergamot and grapefruit, and Cannabis Patchouli likened to a chic men’s cologne (bergamot-heavy, leafy and earthy). Obviously, the bottles totally look the part with their two-tone graphic-play of foliage and bio-sourced wood. Meanwhile, If you’re missing the sex note, you might find it – surprisingly – in one of the Dries van Noten eaux de toilette. Sur Ma Peau* is a bergamot, vanilla and tonka blend described as ‘bursting freshness versus pure, sensual addiction’. I’m tempted.

Finally, something to look forward to post-summer. Paul Smith* is about to launch a quad of home fragrances, all influenced by his personal olfactory memory bank. Having had a sneak peek sniff, I can vouch for the nostalgic ‘Daydreamer’ candle (below) and reed diffusers, channelling Smith’s summer vacations cycling through bucolic French countryside (think aromatic clary sage, verbena, lavender and hay bales). Save the date for September when they arrive in stores and online.
