How good was the beauty look in my last editorial shoot? Make-up artist Jessica Mejianailed the post-summer contemplative mood perfectly with highlit cheekbones, sepia lids and well, that’s pretty much it. She kindly wrote down her how-to (below) and while the ingredients list isn’t lengthy, it’s all down to technique. (more…)
I’ve wanted to shoot with Vanessa Jackman for yonks. We met on a funny bloggers’ trip to Paris a few years ago and generally catch up twice a year on the fashion week circuit where she shoots street style (her blog is shortlisted for a Bloglovin’ award – go vote!) and I research the shows.
Finally we carved some time this summer to shoot the charming and creative Claudia Gould, who epitomises the new breed of multi-pronged model with attitude. Our friends at MIH Jeans gave us the run of their West London showroom and a rail of AW14 samples. The Phoebe Slim is already something of a cult jean, while we all cooed over the men’s Jean Machine chunky navy sweater, one of those wear-anywhere-and-everywhere staples. I also loved the inky indigo raw-edged straight skirt, styled here with a Post-It pink bra from & Other Stories.
The theme for the shoot was loosely denim-based. We wanted to evoke a laid back but bittersweet mood that expresses the melancholy of late summer-early autumn. So I added to the mix Rejina Pyo’s ruched red skirt, Dusan’s luxurious poncho and a double-layered jacket from 3.1 Phillip Lim, all newly arrived at The Shop At Bluebird. There’s a time and a place for logo-waistband cotton smalls… but this isn’t one of them. No, this is the time for sweet nothings, lace fripperies and sheer silk sets, preferably in neon-accented colours or playful floral prints. I scooped up a caseful of Agent Provocateur goodies for my latest Disneyrollergirl editorial shoot, with Chiara Romagnoli behind the lens. If you’re in the mood for bright smalls, I recommend the candy-coloured lace bras, lovely under sheer blouses or summer’s indispensible white boyfriend shirt.
The bodysuits are nothing short of fabulous, whether frilly and bohemian, or gamine in black ruffles. And should you be on the lookout for decadent nightwear-slash-loungewear, then I can highly recommend the signature satin pyjamas – beautifully cut and seductive as hell…

What to do when Dior calls and asks if you’d like to interpret its fall 2014 collection Disneyrollergirl-stylee? First you grab your creative collaborator, (thank you photographer Emma Miranda Moore), then you descend on the Dior showroom, making a beeline for all those epic accessories – that knitted neck-warmer, those Mise En Dior tribal earrings, the moonscape scarf, bejewelled necklaces and the newest version of my favourite Grand Bal Plisse Soleil watch. Plus of course, a few select clothing choices to go with.
The fall 2014 collection is Dior’s equivalent to pre-fall but there are killer pieces amongst the commercial numbers. The silk leopard-spot coat is as couture-fabulous as you’d expect in its cut and print but its extravagant volume is even more striking when worn as casually as a dressing gown (subtext: ‘I woke up like this’). Ditto the silk slip dress with its integrated baby blue cardigan; the most relaxed evening dress you ever saw or the ultimate in decadent nightwear? You decide. And in yet another attempt to deconstruct Dior a little, we have Raf’s ultimate ode to his beloved youth culture, the MA1 as a 3-way coat that unzips at the waist to become a jacket and skirt of New Look-esque proportions. Be assured, this is not your mother’s Dior…
