Five-buck Byredo candles are coming (*kind of)
This has to be one of the most genius post-Covid launches I’ve seen.
Byredo’s Ben Gorham has teamed up with IKEA to produce a line of scented candles in rustic-chic ceramic holders, which will sell for as little as £5. If there’s one thing we cherish now, it’s things that make our homes feel secure and comforting. Candles were one of the unsurprising successes of lockdown, with Perfumer H reporting an uptick of its hand-poured cult candles at the height of the pandemic and start-ups like Good Candles popping up out of nowhere. Candles are also symbolic. They suggest spiritual rituals and the combination of the flame and smell are meditative and transportive.
But in this case, the genius thing is the price. We all want to make our wfh set-up as uplifting as possible, but not everyone can splash out on Cire Trudon. The Ben Gorham X IKEA candles (*not in fact branded ‘Byredo‘ but ‘OSYNLIG‘) start at £5 for a small candle in fragrances like Tobacco and Honey and Peach Blossom and Bamboo, and go up to £25 for a three-wick lidded candle. Alas, they’re not available online, so be prepared to trek to the local store and queue.

This is exciting! Affordable even for someone made redundant (such as me). I hope I fall in love with at least one of the scent combos; I tend to have a viscerally negative or positive response immediately upon smelling a fragrance.

Sorry to hear that Jennifer. There has to be one appealing scent in there – I love the sound of Tobacco & Honey…
