Personalised scent at Ormonde Jayne
I had my first Ormonde Jayne scent experience a few weeks ago, in the newly refurbished boutique in Royal Arcade, off Old Bond Street. The store has been in this little arcade for 17 years and founder Linda Pilkington told me that most of the arcade neighbours (think Paul Smith, Meyrowitz eyewear and Charbonnel & Walker) have been there just as long. Not only that, but there’s a community of other longstanding ‘residents’ of this part of Old Bond Street, who she has seen grow older up over the years. “The local tradespeople wave and say ‘hello Miss Jayne’, even though that’s not my name. It would be too awkward to correct them after all this time so I go along with it!” she confessed.
The store is lovely, the new counter is in the shape of a perfume stopper and the made to measure service lets you choose your desired oil concentration up to 42%. I chose Isfarkand, a cool zesty cologne of lime, vetiver, cedar, bergamot and pink pepper in 40% concentration which is perfect for spring. Other Ormonde Jayne classics include Ta’if, an Arabian rose and Champaca, a sweet Indian floral. A completely independent business, Pilkington is known for identifying new notes and rare ingredient years ahead of the competition.
Tomorrow, as part of London Craft Week, you can play at being perfumer with a special ‘create your own scent’ workshop. Aided by Pilkington, you can add your own top notes to Ormonde Jayne’s secret accords to create a completely bespoke and personal scent. The workshops are on the hour from 1-4pm. Book here.
