Buy it now: back to Scholl
The ergonomic fashion sandal craze is going nowhere.
Birkenstocks are now firmly embedded in the fashion canon with their own ‘designer’ tier of styles* priced at circa £300, while Crocs now has a dedicated creative director for its Crocs X Pollex Pod collection. Meanwhile, Scholl is making a comeback with a raft of collabs I hadn’t been aware of ‘til I saw a mention on Keep It Chic.
Scholl slots comfortably at the intersection of gorpcore and hippiecore with its Chicago podiatry heritage (although some question the origin story) and wholesome looks. The Re/Done x Scholl collab (below) reflects this perfectly with a slightly elevated heel, squared off toe and tan leather straps that complement Re/Done’s vintage denim schtick. What’s new about this collaboration is that Re/Done uses responsibly sourced beechwood and leather for soles and straps, as well as denim straps sourced directly from their own jeans recycling. Alternatively, if you’re out clubbing for eight hours, DJ Honey Dijon has you covered with her Honey Fucking Dijon x Scholl collab* (top). And Berlin-based GmBH’s mesh-and-rubber-nodule slides (below) are a mash-up of every comfort shoe design code to date. It’s giving summer at Berghain but make it high fashion. (See more here.)
Of course, if none of those collabs appeal, or you just want to keep it old school, the OG unadulterated Scholls can be found at ASOS*, Scholl and Schuh* at around £33-£120. The cream, black and tan wood-and-leather Scholl Pescura take me straight back to 1978 – just the thing for fellow nostalgists.
