I can’t get through winter without… Playa

Playa hair care

Winter is a bitch isn’t it? I just can’t with these flat, grey, dark-by-3pm afternoons. The only thing that tempts me out of my bed – one duvet, four blankets, and two hot water bottles at last count – is the promise of a piping hot shower and invigorating scent-infused suds. My current saviour is the hair line by LA-based Playa.

I’m a hair minimalist so I don’t use a ton of styling products but this is a very concise edit of essentials which has the added bonus of transporting you instantly to Venice Beach. As with all modern luxury brands, Playa has a beautiful Insta-filter aesthetic with white and rose gold branding and an ‘I want her lifestyle’ Instagram feed. But beyond that, the products are also really good quality and made with natural oils and botanical ingredients.

I’ve been using the Playa Every Day Shampoo on my greasy-roots-normal-ends hair and following with the Supernatural conditioner. The shampoo is an incredibly thick clear gel, so thick that I prefer to unscrew the cap and thunk out a dollop into my palm than wait for it to reach the nozzle. But a little goes a long way and it’s great at keeping the oil at bay.

I usually use Shu Uemura Shape Paste on my damp short hair but for more texture I’m enjoying the Playa Endless Summer Sea Salt Spray with its salty-sweet smell that’s so evocatively beachy. This is my first time trying salt spray and I love it. It’s alcohol free, so non-damaging and uses blackseed and chia seed extract to accompany the salt for a less drying result. Isn’t it amazing how emotionally beneficial a summery scent can be for a mood uplift? Beauty to me is multi sensorial so it has to smell and look as good as it feels.

Until now, Playa has only been available in the U.S. or from Violet Grey. But this season it’s coming to the UK so look out for it at Liberty and Space NK soon. See you at the (imaginary) beach…
