“As much as we believe today’s customers know who is designing what, plenty don’t. The revolving door of talent is just too continuous. Ultimately, they just want to put beautiful things in their closet they don’t already own.” Wise words from Ken Downing, Neiman Marcus’s senior vice president and fashion director in the New York Times this week.
As such, Zandra Rhodes prints and mini-me lipstick cases were the headline grabbers at Valentino SS17, designed solely this time by Pierpaolo Piccioli. Was it hugely different from before? No, I don’t think so, so fans can sleep easy. The colour palette was sublime, with a sunset kaleidoscope of reds, from coral to deep magenta to a patent-leather coat the exact shade of a sticky toffee apple.
I loved the Hieronymus Bosch-inspired embroidered jacket and all the pleated dresses. Look closely and you’ll notice a recurring motif of heart and dagger – cue an outpouring of Insta heart emojis. And how genius are those little Valentino lipstick holders? Another best seller for the accessory cabinet. Well done Mr Piccioli.
