Christian Dior couture autumn 2017
My favourite looks from the Dior couture AW17 show. While the gowns were certainly beautiful and red carpet-worthy, it was the coats, tailoring and shoes that spoke to me. Continuing the theme from Cruise 2018 of pioneering 20th century women (that show featured lengthy Georgia O’Keeffe-esque proportions and rustic flat sandals), we saw sweeping voluminous silhouettes, neatly cinched with narrow belts and excellent chunky shoes for walking fast and purposefully in.
I’m not anti-heels, but when I need to get shit done, I need walkable shoes. And although couture customers don’t usually have to bother themselves with such trifles, it all trickles down to the 99% eventually. I wasn’t overly keen on all the hats but I love the styling of the one below, just shading the eyes and contrasting nicely with the birds nest hair.
The Vogue.com website, with its magnifying function, is the best place to view this collection. There are some amazing embroidered pieces that need to be seen close up…

This collection really speaks to me. The tailoring, the embroidery, the shoes! I love ‘feminine’ clothes with ‘sensible’ shoes. Like you, not anti heel but shoes must not hurt and the question that I always ask can I run in them. In these uncertain times, shoes that hinder have no place in my life! The shoes shown with the gowns look comfortable and elegant.
Thank you for featuring this beautiful collection.

Thanks Claire. I didn’t show them but I agree, the croc shoes shown with the gowns are also extremely desirable.
