Cartier carabiner, anyone?
Gorpcore jewellery – yay or nay?
Personally, I’m feeling the elevated carabiner-clip-as-jewellery vibe.
Back in spring, Cartier unveiled its take on the utilitarian carabiner clip – an audacious, deco-esque watch-carabiner hybrid set with diamonds, rubies and emeralds as part of its Cartier Libre Polymorph collection (above). Suitably incongruous and decadent, it’s the kind of irreverent move I love from Cartier.
Then last month, Chanel presented its, Haute Joaillerie Sport collection featuring its own take on the humble carabiner. Not as successful as the Cartier gem-fest, the ‘Sporty 5’ necklace has a deconstructed carabiner in the shape of an asymmetrical 5 (Coco Chanel’s lucky number and thus an important house code) accompanied by a pear-cut diamond (below). It’s fun but doesn’t quite land the witty punch of the Cartier watch.
Alternatively, for those more utility oriented, Ramdane Touhami has designed his first jewellery collection for his A Young Hiker outdoor store. Inspired by his collection of antique carabiners, I’m totally in favour of the dainty ear candy in gold or silver (below).
