The perfect ten fashion items of all time
If you’re someone who loves to intellectualise fashion, then Lauren Cochrane’s new book, The Ten: The Stories Behind the Fashion Classics* should stoke your fires.
It’s a deeper-than-deep dive into fashion’s enduring classics from the white tee to the blue jean via the mini skirt, Breton top, ballet pump, little black dress, stiletto, hoodie, trench coat and biker jacket. In case you’re thinking, ‘yawwwnnnn, what more is there to know?’, the answer is, plenty.
Cochrane goes into the history, socio-political and cultural references of her top ten pieces, including detailed interviews with CEOs, designers and historians. And for added value, there are plenty of how-to-wear styling tips and pics (I’m living for William Burroughs in his sensible trench) to reinforce the longevity of her perfect ten.
My own personal Top Ten includes my Levi’s jeans, Agnes b tees, Mackintosh mac and Margaret Howell Breton. Instead of stilettos I’m more of a Church’s Derbys girl and instead of the mini and LBD, I’d go for blazers and crew neck sweaters (my style crush Linda V Wright just sent me one of her perfect Crimson sweaters). I would definitely add a Pangaia hoodie and Celine biker to my fantasy list though…
The Ten by Lauren Cochrane is available at Waterstones*, Barnes & Noble* and bookshop.org*.
(P.S. my book, The New Garconne is still available here*.)
